Guatemala... Here we come!
|
- It is estimated that there are over 370,000 orphans in Guatemala. Many of these
children come from families burdened with extreme poverty.
- Guatemala has the highest illiteracy rate in Central America. Eight out of every ten
children are undernourished.
- Today, 56 percent of Guatemalans live below the poverty line and 32 percent live
on less than $2 a day. In rural areas, 78 percent of indigenous children under the
age of 18 live in poverty.
- Guatemala has one of the highest income inequities in the world. The wealthiest 20
percent of the population receives 61 percent of the nation’s income, while the
poorest 20 percent receives only 4 percent. Statistics from World Vision

Mission Focus and Projects
In Guatemala we will be working at the Malnutrition Center in San Juan, Sacatepéquez, an
hour’s drive from our hotel in the beautiful colonial city of Antigua. The Malnutrition Center
has been in operation for many years, first as a tuberculosis hospital, and then in the mid
70’s it was changed to meet the needs of children suffering from malnutrition. Currently,
the center has over 75 children. Nearly half of Guatemala’s children are malnourished, the
highest in all of Central America. On this trip we will be loving and caring for children, from
infants to ten years of age-- holding, feeding, bathing, and providing medical care as well
as providing spiritual nurturing through Bible Stories, singing, crafts, games and other
activities. We will also be working on various maintenance and repair projects in the
Center in order to bring the facilities to a standard where more children can be nourished
back to full health. The more hands that join us on this trip, the more love we will be able
to share with these precious children and the ones who care for them.
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27

UPDATE - 12/7/2011
Our trip is now one month away and we are so ready to go! This has been an exciting
year as God has been preparing our family to take this trip to Guatemala. We have seen
God's hand directing every step we've taken. We are also excited that our trip will allow us
to visit with a little girl that we've sponsored for several years through World Vision. Her
name is Zuly. To work this visit out, we'll be staying through January 17th. The rest of the
team will come back on the 14th.
We want to thank all those (and there are many) who have helped us with fund raisers,
given support and have been praying for us. It means so much to us. We are on the final
stretch of raising funds for our trip. If you would like to give to our trip, you can give
directly to Orphans Heart. All donations are tax deductible. Just mention the donation is
for the Fountain family trip. Click here to DONATE
